Overview
What Is Third-Party Ownership?
Third-party ownership means having another entity hold and manage your investments. This common financial market practice takes several forms:
- Brokers: Hold your investments and track your ownership
- Custodians: Safeguard your assets and handle paperwork
- Nominee accounts: Hold investments in their name while you remain the beneficial owner
Though the third party legally holds your assets, you retain all ownership benefits—including dividends and voting rights. This arrangement is standard in modern investing and is regulated to protect investors.
What has changed in ORCA
Before this update, ORCA could only show direct ownership. Let's use a simple example: If Person A owned part of Company B, and Company B owned part of Company C, there was no easy way to show that Person A also indirectly owned part of Company C.
This was a problem because it made it hard to see and understand ownership chains, especially when multiple companies were involved. Users had to figure out these connections manually, which was time-consuming and confusing.
Now, with the new third-party ownership feature, ORCA can easily show these indirect ownership connections. It clearly shows how ownership flows through different companies, making it much easier to understand who owns what.
